A Meta-analysis of Music Therapy Variables : With Focus on Age Variables such as Adults and Senior Citizens

Abstract
In this study, the variables that showed therapeutic effect in the music and therapy studies conducted over the last 10 years from Jan 2000 till Jul 2013 were categorized into psychological variable group, physiological variable group, social variable group, cognitive variable group and then the effect of the therapeutic variables were analyzed and measured using meta-analysis. In addition, the variation of effect in conjunction with subject(adults, senior citizens) and subject types (mental psychology, physical physiology, social adjustment) were examined. The results showed all variable groups had significant effect. Of them, psychological variable group- suppression showed the greatest effect size, followed by in the order of psychological variable group-enhancement, socal variable group, physical variable group, physiological variable group and cognitive variable group. With regard to the effect by subject, psychological variable group-suppression, enhancement and social variable group showed significant effect; integration in psychological variable group-suppression showed the greatest effect, followed by in the order of adults and senior citizens. In psychological variable group-enhancement, adults showed the greatest effect, followed by senior citizens. In social variable group, adults showed the greatest effect, followed by in order of integration and senior citizens. With regard to the effect by subject type, psychological variable group-suppression and enhancement showed significant effect, and mental psychology in psychological variable showed the greatest effect, followed by in the order of social adaptation and physical physiology. In psychological variable group-enhancement, mental psychology showed the greatest effect, followed by social adaptation.
